When Judy Elliott's sister and her husband are killed in an air-raid in the Blitz, she is the only one able to look after their little girl, Penny. Unfortunately jobs are hard to come by, especially when there is a child in tow, and she is forced to take the position of housemaid in a house in the country called Pilgrim's Rest. When she is warned by an old friend that there is a curse on the house she laughs it off, but accidents keep happening - accidents that threaten the lives of all those who live there. Fortunately, Miss Silver is willing to investigate.

Pilgrim Rest Miss Silver Mysteries Book 10 (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Wentworth Diana Bishop Isis Publishing Ltd Books

I've been reading the Miss Silver mysteries in order (this is #10 of 32, written in 1946) and the one remarkable thing about them is how, despite recurring plot elements that ought to be tediously repetitive, the books are all engrossing. The basics are the same in each: a large cast of characters, lots of tiny details that can only be put together by the illustrious Miss Silver while she knits her way through the story, and a pair of young lovers with obstacles on the path to happy-ever-after. Despite taking place in different locales (London, English countryside), the same police tend to show up with the same willful blindness to the obvious in each book. These are not blockbuster size and thus there are limits to what can be done in them. With many characters and less room to round them out, they tend to be mildly stereotypical with a few amusing quirks of speech to differentiate them. The focus is generally on plot details, which are rehashed quite a bit. Miss Silver, the retired governess, almost always wraps things up by explaining exactly what happened from start to finish. Those are the basic elements of the books. The stories are fleshed out with descriptions of furnishings, clothing and food; somehow, the author manages to find fresh motives for each book, and the atmosphere of wartime Britain is brought to life for a particular class of people. At Pilgrim's Rest, an ancestral home, too many members of the family are going to their eternal rest and Miss Silver is brought in to find out what's going on. It's unfortunate that her client doesn't heed her sage advice, but the reader can be confident that Justice will eventually prevail. As always in these mid-century novels, there is no technology to speak of, no foul language or graphic sex, and extremely limited physical descriptions of crime. It's a cozy, a clean mystery suitable for readers of any age and particularly appealing to those who like the period detail of "Upstairs, Downstairs".

Pilgrim Rest Miss Silver Mysteries Book 10 (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Wentworth Diana Bishop Isis Publishing Ltd Books Reviews

Miss Silver is asked to investigate when Roger Pilgrim is the victim of two unexplained accidents either of which could have killed him. Frank Abbot - Scotland Yard detective - tries to dissuade his friend Judy Eliot from taking up employment as a parlour maid at Roger's house, Pilgrim's Rest. There have been several unexplained deaths and disappearances connected with the house in the last few years and it seems as though the house carries its own bad luck.

There will be several more suspicious deaths before the local police - headed by Randall March an erstwhile pupil of Miss Silver's - manage to work out who is responsible. Miss Silver meanwhile keeps her own counsel and continues to knit imperturbably, smiling enigmatically when the police fail to see what is under their noses.

I really enjoy the Miss Silver books because they are based on character and motivation rather than excessive violence. Miss Silver is very good at spotting the details that others miss and of course as an elderly lady she is able to fade into the background and be overlooked by everyone - including the murderer. This book is well up Patricia Wentworth's high standard of writing and I thoroughly recommend it.
This is the most I've seen of Miss Silver so far in my somewhat random reading, with her appearing at the very beginning and sticking through to the end. It is interesting to have her right on hand in a household with "goings ons."

It is said of Agatha Christie that she copied styles and themes of her contemporaries and other writers, especially in her earlier writing days. Having met Miss Silver in several times and places, it seems clear to me that Agatha's Miss Marple coming out two years or so after Miss Silver was a clear copy on Agatha's part. Then, the pattern repeats when Wentworth takes up her Miss Silver character over a decade later and then continues with her. Christie did the same thing with her Miss Marple, again following along a couple of years after Wentworth's return to her character and going on with her. Christie enlarged on her old lady character, adjusting her a bit after the first book, but the model seems to be Miss Silver, who always stayed rather tight and true to her original persona. Interesting.

What a smooth read is Ms. Wentworth. And there's a strength of handling too, as she maneuvers the bends in the story road. She's not afraid to take hold and set things moving. And this one did move along. It was one of the most absorbing ones so far. Very skillfully and interestingly done with a story line that includes relationships (always a love story in the balance) and relational aspects. I personally didn't care for the adventurous nature of the ending, but likely many will.

Miss Silver is up to her family knitting, as always. Here we have a "jumper" being finished off right on time to get in the birthday mail. That British usage of the word puzzled me until I looked it up and found out it is a pullover sweater. Miss Silver helps out her nieces and nephews' families with socks and other practical knitted clothes items. She often remarks on her "pre-war" yarn as she begins her project, being a quality that's harder to find during and right after the war years. It is also on record elsewhere that she contributes a large part of her discretionary income to these young family members as well. Hopefully, when things catch up, Miss Silver can get a spruce on her own wardrobe. She's such a giving sort of lady. I just hate to see her going around so shabby herself. )
always love patricia wentworths books
Miss Silver is great in this one as always. A great read. I enjoy all Miss Silver novels.
If you enjoy Agatha Christie, you will love Patricia Wentworth. Miss Silver is as unique a character as Miss Marple. These two writers were writing at the same time, so Miss Silver is NOT a copy (knock-off) of Miss Marple. A great read and super "who-dunit"!
A gallant heroine takes up the care of her orphaned niece during the War years. She takes a job a live - in maid in a remote estate. Strange people do strange things, which come to the notice of the police. The policeman takes notice of the maid and calls in Miss Silver to save her until he can propose. Great spooky atmosphere and things going bump in the night.
